need ride to westin
Nov. 10th, 2009 | 12:17 am
heyo,
is there anyone able to swing by and pick me up from o'hare next thursday for the con around 4pm? i don't want to get a ride from a furry stranger, been there done that didn't like it 8I
otherwise, is the METRA reasonable for rush-hour travel with lots of luggage? i am going to assume "no" -- not because i can't manage my bags, but because i don't want to be bowled over by commuters.
i am doing this con on a budget of about 5 cents so if i can avoid the taxi, i'd like to.
and, oh yeah, enjoy some Devotchka. this one gets stuck in my head pretty much daily. it is "epic" and not in the nerd buzzword sense.

happy halloweener
Oct. 31st, 2009 | 12:26 am
yo, happy halloweenie [a song treat for YOU]!
after i turned 10 or 11 i actually really, really hated halloween -- costumes pissed me off, i felt like a huge goober going around asking for candy, and i was more content just sitting at my computer for the evening. after i built my first fursuit costume i started having fun again [though i never trick or treated past childhood, i still think that's VERY WEIRD], and this is the first year EVER that i've built a costume just for halloween from scratch. there's a huge costume parade downtown, think 20k+ participants, and while we went in fursuit last year i wanted to do something new this year ... so, presenting ...

RECESSION HALLOWEEN 2009 COSTUMES!
these are both made completely from recycled materials and scraps -- my mask, the bird thing, is 100% cardboard, masking tape and paper mache on a balaclava. i used fur scraps and other stuff i just had laying around; the only item that's 'new' is the ELwire handed down to me from my squeeze. glowing eyes are a fun gimmick!
the wolf is
tabernak's creation, and i think it is VERY RAD coming from a guy who does not Make Things. it's cardboard on top of a recycled fursuit mask base with fur scraps from the floor [literally] and some paper and paint accents [check out another view here]. i helped him a little with the detailing but other than that, this is 100% his work -- give him a round of APPLAUSE. we were inspired by
missmonstermel,
nesting and by being poor and not wanting to stumble around in fursuits again. not bad for 2 days i figure! ps, they aren't fursuits and aren't meant to follow the aesthetics of fursuits -- just art pieces that happen to be masks! :)
i'm excited to wear this thing and andrew is happy with his too, i just wanted to share! like i said, this is the first halloween where i didn't just wear a Silly Shirt or throw on a fursuit, so it's kind of cool to me. hope you enjoy your evenings, i'm sure we will [i can drink in this mask].

TOY DESIGN TIME!
Oct. 29th, 2009 | 04:36 pm
GUYS! i did a TUBE FERRET toy design! it's up for voting and comments over at PatchTogether, and YOU are the only ones who can help push it through into production! this would be a 4" - 5" tall TOY that you can put on your desk, throw at your real pet ferrets, whatever! REENACT THE FERRET DANCE animation! comes in two flavours, sable and white!
in order to get the design pushed to pre-production, i need YOU to register for Patchtogether [if you have not yet!], vote the design a "5" AND leave a COMMENT [seriously, the comments COUNT]. what's in it for you? YOUR OWN TUBE FERRET.
please, please, help out if you have a moment, pass it around, it honestly doesn't take much at all to get the ball rolling on this -- i would flip shit for 9 days straight if this came together. i am an avid dsigner toy collector and to have one of my own designs sitting next to my labbits and evil skaters and dunnies, well ... i would likely EXPLODE.
*apparently the website doesn't work with IE [5, 6, 7, newer versions ok], i can't help this, but having it looked at. should be fixed soon.

click those ferrs to vote! thank you!!!!

have you guys seen this?
an ANIMATION based on my "dook nation" drawing. PRETTY AWESOME!! [and now it's on youtube so i can show it to my mom and not make her have to look at furaffinity, which i would not be embarrassed to do but i don't want her to complain to me later, lol]

so tell me -- if i were to submit a ferret toy design [vinyl toy/figure] to patchtogether, just like the above characters, do you think it'd get enough votes to go into preproduction? would you be interested? i hate contests
but it'd be cool!

need photo help
Oct. 23rd, 2009 | 11:55 am
mood:
frustrated
any photo-friends around to help me work out some lighting for my shots? it's getting harder and harder to find good daylight to work with as the sun isn't even hitting our apartment anymore and overhead fluorescents alone are pretty gross.
this is an example of the best i can do as of late, which is very noisy, muddy and went thru a lot of shoppin'. here is the photo before i adjusted it
i am messing with the camera settings, sure, but there is only so much i can do -- pumping up the ISO just so i can get a halfway-usable shot in a dark room isn't cutting it. i need better lights. not sure if i should be looking at a strobe or something else, but the set up at the moment is simply the overhead fluorescents in a kitchen with room for perhaps one more light. otherwise they're going to be too close and blow it out anyways. my kitchen is this big. that was me standing in the doorway, the backdrop wall is immediately to my left flush with the doorway. small.
if anyone has any suggestions for help on this, especially on a budget [i do not mind buying a light but it has to be a cheap-ass light], let me know. i know i can do better than this. these photos are SHIT.

the funzone
Oct. 22nd, 2009 | 03:12 pm
washing costumes here in the city is pretty exciting! i don't really sweat enough for mine to get stanky but i like to wash them after every event if i can, just because i like the clean smell :) i took andrew's to be cleaned too because it was new, still lots of loose hairs, lots of scratchy sizing in the fur backing, and he sweats a ton.
so, these get dragged across queens blvd, a 6-lane-plus-2-bus-lane busy throughway, with nicknames like "the boulevard of death" to the laundromat where i cram them inside-out into a $2.75 washer and wonder if the chinese people are watching me. i generally leave my clothes at the laundromat because it's only a block or two up the road, and i don't think anybody is going to want to steal these. they are washed on cold with a nice spin cycle to get most of the water out, and then i grab my garbage bag and head back out across the road to drag two wet fursuits back to my apartment ...
then i have to find a way to lay them out to dry in the kitchen which is the only room in the apartment without an unobstructed window [and enough floor space, and a linoleum floor that can handle water dripping onto it]. i only have one drying rack, so the other body suit went on a tv tray with some kind of metal rack/shelf on it to allow air to circulate underneath. i let them dry from the inside out, turning them right side out again and brushing them as they dry. i tried the box fan to get them to dry faster today since we don't get any sunlight and a. they completely block the fridge and b. are butted up to the oven and stove, so the faster they dry out, the better.
THIS IS ALL VERY EXCITING, but just thought i'd share in order to compare this kind of situation to just throwing them in the wash at home and putting them outside to dry during the day. it is pretty much a huge hassle but i love having a clean and fluffy costume to put on for my next event so it's worth it to me to go through all this crap. don't moan next time you have to wash your costumes at home!

mood: very tired, not getting ahead
i have an extra fox here.
would you like it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie wItem&item=330365541180
beautiful fox partial with mask by Qarrezel, rest of the bits by me. moving jaw, fits heads up to 23" around, and is going for under ~$250 at the time of writing this -- Qarrezel's costumes go for $800+, so i think that is a Pretty Good Deal. auction ends sunday!
there are loads of lovely photos and more information on the auction page, check it out if you'd like and please pass it along if you know of any interested parties! :)
-----------------
in other news i am tired. all costumes on schedule for FF, all artwork is behind. offering refunds for commissions so people do't have to wait, behind on MFF stuff because it is sadly unpaid. ergh ... i will catch up someday. one for one ... not so bad. :/

let's learn!
Sep. 30th, 2009 | 10:24 am
today, let's learn what the word feral really means!
"A feral organism is one that has escaped from domestication and returned, partly or wholly, to a wild state ... The dictionary definition of a feral animal is one which has escaped from a domestic or captive status and is living more or less as a wild animal. Zoologists generally exclude from the ‘feral’ category animals which were genuinely wild before they escaped from captivity: neither lions escaped from a zoo nor the sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) recently re-introduced into the UK are regarded as 'feral'." - Wikipedia!
so ...
is your lion character who walks on 4 legs and has an angry expression "feral?"
NOPE
is your pygmy goat character, who lives independent from man/farmer joe on a remote cliffside and has had all signs of domestication almost completely bred out of its genes, "feral?"
YEP
is your normally-clothed dragonpokemorph character standing on 4 legs and wearing a collar "feral?"
NOPE
is a wild mustang in montana "feral?"
YEP
is a wolf-related ANYTHING "feral?"
NOPE
is any previously domesticated animal who now lives independent of man considered "feral?" ie, wild stray cats, wild horses, wild pigs?
YEAH MAN
is your talking furry character "feral," regardless of whether or not it's wearing raver pants?
NO SO STOP IT
feral = domesticated animal gone wild
feral =/= an animal that walks on four legs and looks angry
HOPE YOU ENJOYED LEARNING TODAY
[XTRA CREDIT: if you do a search for 'feral' on FA, the results are pretty hi-larious!]
